People with disability make up about 20% of the total population. No matter where you work or live, you will come across people with disability. This training aims to provide an introduction to working with people with a disability.Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to
- Demonstrate an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of people with disability
- Identify stereotypes about people with disability and demonstrate awareness of the impact of their own attitudes on working with people with disability
- Respond to and report risks or potential risks of abuse
- Identify the different types of disability and models for understanding disability
- Demonstrate an understanding of the effects of culture in disability work
- Identify different legislation affecting people with disability
- Identify a range of networks of services working for people with disability
- Identify strategies to prevent abuse
Target group
Anyone who wants to enhance their skills and knowledge. This course is particularly relevant to new staff in the disability services sector.Assessment
Participants wishing to obtain a Statement of Attainment for CHCCDIS1B 'Orientation to Disability Work' must complete 4 assessments.The course is designed so that all assessments will be done during the course, except for one which will be done between Day 1 and Day 2.
