cultural abilities - training and support imageWe aim to provide the best training in cultural diversity, disability and related areas. We are innovative and responsive to needs expressed for continuous learning and development.

mdaa cultural abilities is the training arm of the Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association of NSW (MDAA), the peak advocacy organisation for people from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) with disability, their families and carers. Training is based on MDAA's experience and knowledge.

We deliver relevant and current training that will greatly assist participants to enhance their capacity to work with people from diverse backgrounds. Our training program meets the needs of the human services sector.

We develop and provide high quality training and resources that respond to current issues, and we contribute to the advancement of cultural and disability competence.

In addition to our calendar and tailor made training, mdaa cultural abilities works with human service agencies to enhance their capacity to respond effectively to community diversity, through our consultancy and support services.

Free Cultural Competency Training Sessions for Accommodation Providers ADHC Funded

The Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Supported Accommodation Development Project funded by ADHC has been designed to support ADHC funded organisations providing accommodation in the Metro South Region.  As part of this project MDAA has developed two free training sessions for accommodation providers to further develop their cultural competency and enhance service provision to ADHC clients from a CALD background.

Workshop 1: Making your Service accessible to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds with disability

Outline

This hands-on workshop attempts to resolve some of the most common difficulties workers have in trying to make their services more accessible to people from a NESB. It will outline the barriers people from a NESB experience in attempting to access services, why some people don't use services at all, or why services seem unable to attract workers who speak another language.

The aim of this session is to increase the competence of participants to develop and implement programs that are accessible and culturally responsive to people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Promoting to and networking with ethnic communities
This is the perfect workshop to do before you spend money on translations and then get stuck with: "How do I distribute the information? How do I let people know about my services?"

This practical workshop will focus on the why, who and how. It will leave you with the skills and knowledge to make connections, build bridges and develop reciprocal relationships with ethnic communities that last.

Getting the most from Interpreters and Translators
Interpreters and Translations are the most expensive items when aiming to make your services accessible to people from NESB.

This workshop will provide you with all the "handy-hints" and ideas you need to get the most out of the money spent, and a quality control system which will never again leave you wondering whether the Interpreter really said what you wanted or whether the Translation is of a quality consistent with your service.

Making your service accessible to people from NESB
This hands-on workshop attempts to resolve some of the most common difficulties workers have in trying to make their services more accessible to people from NESB.

It will outline the barriers people from NESB experience in attempting to access services.

Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers (CHCCS405A)
This workshop is designed to give you the cultural awareness you need to communicate and cooperate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

It was a privilege to meet with you all and I was very inspired by your organisation. The Community Voices program and your respect for people with disabilities really stood out. I hope we might some day move to a model similar to yours in sexual assault services."

"I learned more about cultural diversity and how to relate and use my knowledge when working with disabilities"

(Workshop Participant)

"The training was very confronting, challenging my personal views and concepts."
(Jonathan Xavier, Woodville Community Services)
