Moldovan president launches initiative of signing UN Disability Convention

Uzbekistan to cut some disability benefits

(Stan Rogers28.12.10, Tashkent) Legislation approved by the Uzbek parliament's upper chamber and awaiting President Islam Karimov's signature will eliminate some disability benefits, IWPR reported December 24.

The legislation does not affect those already in the third, least severe disability category. However, new applicants for that category will not be eligible for payments. The government will still subsidise their prosthetic limbs, crutches, wheelchairs and hearing aids and help them find jobs.

The third disability category contains about 200,000 people, according to official statistics. Their monthly payment is 60,000 UZS (about US $37).
