Moldovan president launches initiative of signing UN Disability Convention

28 March 2007

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has launched an initiative to the government to kick off the procedure of signing the UN Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities, the presidential press service has said.

The document was adopted by the UN General Assembly in New York on 13 December 2006. This is the first international comprehensive document streamlined towards protecting the rights of people with disabilities.

The Convention being unanimously adopted by the UN points to the fact that it is recognised by the international community as an important instrument designed to promote and protect the rights and dignity of one of the most vulnerable category of people.

Under the provisions of the convention, disabled people benefit from the same fundamental rights and freedoms as the other members of the society - the right to education and non-discrimination, the right to access to physical space, to transport, to information and communication, the right to equality to law and access to justice, the right to health care, labour, social protection, participation in political, social and cultural life, etc.

The ceremony of opening the signing and ratification of the Convention and Optional protocol is to be held in New York on 30 March 2007.

President Voronin said that the signing of this convention will mean that Moldova accepts the international principles of promoting and protecting the rights of people with disabilities, the importance of which is irrefutable.

Taking into account the world changes, Moldova is to adjust its legislation on disabled people to the international norms and standards, set by the Convention, in order to ensure that they have the possibility of integrating into the society and exerting the fundamental human rights and freedoms.
