Kuwait News Agency, 28 January
2007 - Shuaa
Al-Qati
(KUWAIT) Bahrain is expected to play host to the 7th
Forum of the GCC Society for the Disabled, set for March
6.
The forum will be organised by the Bahrain's national
institution for care for the disabled.
Maj. Gen. Sheikh Duaij bin Khalifa Al Khalifa,
Chairman of the organising committee, told Kuwait News
Agency (KUNA) that the forum would be held under the
rubric "Media and Disability - Interactive Relationship
and Shared Responsibility." It aims to further mass
media's contributions on the issues of people with
special needs, and the media's role in demonstrating
their suffering and aspiration, and addressing negative
societal concepts and views concerning the disabled, he
said.
Sheikh Duaij extended invitation to all specialists
and researchers in disability affairs to attend the
gathering and to present researches and papers towards
the improvement of the services offered to the
disabled.
The forum will show how modern mass media can serve
the issues of the disabled and the handicapped, he
added.
Workshops handling the artistic critique of Arab and
foreign movies bearing on people with special needs are
to be held on the sidelines of the gathering. Other
workshops will also be organised for journalists and TV
reporters, who deal with issues related to the
disabled.
The Bahrain-based GCC Society for the Disabled seeks
to provide a database for people with special needs,
release publications and periodicals on the disabled,
carry out researches and studies in the field of
disability, and reinforce cooperation with and among
state agencies, civil society, international
organizations, and individuals in the field.
It also seeks to urge GCC member countries to enact
laws and issue legislation to safeguard the rights of the
disabled.
