On Friday 16 March 2006, MDAA’s Individual Advocate, Jim Cla’bour (Wollongong), Systemic Worker, Robert Gruhn (Harris Park, Sydney), Milanka Zivanovic (MDAA Chairperson) and Tony Shoushani (Committee member) hosted the Election Seminar “How to Make Your Vote Count” at Illawarra Multicultural Services in Wollongong. Fifteen eager people attended the meeting. Practical tips on how to make your vote count on the next state election such as “How to fill up a ballot” were presented and also resources were handed out such as “How to write letters to politicians”, “What questions to Ask them” and MDAA’s Election Flyer (to raise awareness about mental health, education and housing). The audience showed interest. They asked a lot of questions and gave feedback especially about understanding how to vote. A quiz on elections raised a lot of comments and participation. The MDAA Committee members showed their expertise in self advocacy and public speaking skills through this forum.
