See through my eyes Art Exhibition

Through my eyes group

Back in May 2006, eight people with disability living in the city and inner west areas of Sydney, met together for the very first time in a little studio in Darlington.

Over the next 12 weeks the participants would continue to meet and share with each other their ideas about photography, screen-printing, sculpture, painting, community and disability.

The course was organised by City and Inner West Disability Advocacy, with many many thanks to MDAA, Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, Accessible Arts, Department of Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, and the City of Sydney Council.

In organising the course, CiWDA hoped to create an environment where people with disability could explore different art forms to speak out about their community, their disability, and their life experiences.

Quotes from the artists:

Greg Collits: What did I like about the process? "Social interaction and meeting new people".

Kedran Sullivan: My designs are thoughts of one spark kindling the great fire of the place we call the big smoke".

Ettianne MJG Anshin: "I enjoyed assisting the other participants and was privileged to document their journey in a photo documentary".

Carmelo Mazzeo: "I've taken photos of different things like some of the bands I've seen at gigs".

Roy Cameron: Sometimes it is necessary to paint like photographs because in the tropics the light is smooth and I like smooth effects in paintings".

Young-Joo Byan: "I can do everything, speak another language, study, work and live in a silent world".

Roger Fyfe says "Challenge and perseverance can bring direction in people's lives."

Danielle "I love Karaoke with a vengeance!" Pham celebrates the sale of two of her works.
